Design and Technology at Hamilton
Our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is built around creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. We provide a highly practical and sensory-rich approach to help our pupils engage with designing, making, and evaluating products in a way that is accessible to all ability levels. DT is an exciting subject that allows pupils to develop fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and independence through purposeful activities.
Our curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including clothing design, materials and their properties, simple joining and fixing, structures, pottery making, robotics, and sustainability. Pupils explore different tools and materials, learning how to shape, assemble, and test their creations. They are encouraged to experiment with textiles, wood, plastic, and recyclable materials to develop an understanding of their properties and uses.
The focus is on exploration and process rather than the final product. Pupils develop problem-solving skills by testing and improving their designs, whether they are creating protective clothing, designing a robot, or constructing a model using recycled materials. Activities are scaffolded to support different abilities, with options for sensory engagement, visual supports, and hands-on demonstrations to aid learning.
DT at Hamilton helps pupils develop key life skills in a fun and engaging way. By working with different materials, exploring how things fit together, and learning how to create functional products, pupils gain confidence and a sense of achievement. We celebrate creativity and encourage every pupil to take part, ensuring that DT remains an exciting and meaningful subject for all.
