Food Technology at Hamilton
Food technology is a favourite subject for many of our pupils at Hamilton. Our Food Technology curriculum is designed to provide engaging, hands-on experiences that build confidence, develop life skills, and encourage sensory exploration. We recognise the diverse needs of our pupils and ensure that every activity is accessible, enjoyable, and tailored to individual abilities.
Through a range of topics, pupils explore different ingredients, develop practical cooking skills, and learn about nutrition and food preparation. From vegetable exploration in the Foundation Stage to bread and pastry making, chocolate tempering, and cake decorating in later years, our curriculum provides varied opportunities for pupils to experience different textures, smells, and tastes. Activities such as making jelly, baking potatoes with a variety of toppings, and exploring food from different cultures help to foster curiosity and independence.
Our approach is sensory-rich, allowing pupils to experience food in a way that suits their individual learning styles. Pupils engage in chopping, grating, mixing, and kneading, supporting their fine and gross motor skill development. Recipes and instructions are adapted to ensure accessibility, using visual aids, communication boards, and hands-on modelling from adults to support learning.
Cooking at Hamilton is not just about preparing food—it’s about exploration, creativity, and developing key life skills. Whether tasting new flavours, decorating cakes, or learning the process of baking bread, pupils gain confidence and independence in a structured, supportive environment. We celebrate each pupil’s progress, ensuring that Food Technology remains an enjoyable and meaningful experience for all.
