History at Hamilton

At Hamilton, our History curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity about the past, providing pupils with opportunities to explore significant events, key historical figures, and how societies have changed over time. We recognise that our pupils may have complex needs, so our approach is tailored to support all ability levels through hands-on learning, exploration, and sensory-based experiences.

Our curriculum covers a range of topics that make history accessible and meaningful. From learning about The Great Fire of London and seaside towns in KS1 to exploring dinosaurs and fossils, medieval life, and ancient civilisations in KS2, pupils engage with history in a way that suits their learning styles. In KS3, pupils examine influential historical periods such as the Industrial Revolution, Black History, and the impact of famous historical figures, using adapted resources and structured activities to promote understanding.

Historical enquiry is embedded throughout our teaching, explore artefacts, and take part in immersive experiences such as role play and creative projects. We focus on developing key skills such as making observations, identifying similarities and differences, and recognising cause and effect, while ensuring that learning is engaging and appropriately scaffolded.

By incorporating multi-sensory activities, practical learning opportunities, and structured support, we aim to make history an inclusive subject that fosters curiosity, builds confidence, and enables all pupils to engage with the past in a meaningful way.
