Geography at Hamilton
At Hamilton, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and a sense of wonder about the world. We provide a rich and engaging learning experience that helps pupils develop their understanding of places, environments, and the impact of human activities. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of all learners through hands-on experiences, interactive lessons, and differentiated activities that ensure accessibility for all.
Geography is delivered three half terms a year, allowing pupils to explore a range of topics in depth. Through these topics, pupils investigate the natural world, weather patterns, different environments, and key geographical concepts. They develop an awareness of physical and human geography, learning about landscapes, climates, and how people interact with their surroundings. Map skills are introduced and built upon, with children using atlases, globes, and digital tools to locate places and compare different regions.
Practical, enquiry-based learning is at the heart of our approach. Pupils engage in sensory experiences, fieldwork, and interactive activities to deepen their understanding. They explore local and global environments, recognising seasonal changes, the impact of natural events, and how humans shape the world.
Across all topics, we focus on developing key geographical skills, including:
-
Observation and enquiry – Exploring the environment, asking questions, and making comparisons.
-
Map skills – Using atlases, globes, and digital maps to locate places.
-
Data collection and analysis – Recording weather patterns, land use, and geographical changes.
-
Communication – Describing places and geographical processes through speaking, writing, and visual representation.
At Hamilton, we believe that Geography helps children understand the world and their place in it. Through an engaging and hands-on approach, we nurture their curiosity and equip them with the knowledge and skills to become informed global citizens.
