Music at Hamilton
Our music curriculum is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and accessible for our learners. We provide structured opportunities for pupils to explore, create, and respond to music in ways that support their communication, sensory needs, and overall development. Music is delivered every other half term, with pupils receiving one hour of dedicated lessons per week.
Our curriculum was designed with our pupils in mind, ensuring it meets their individual needs while promoting engagement and progression. To support this, we have incorporated elements of the Progression of Music Curriculum Skills by Shropshire Music Service, ensuring a clear and structured approach to skill development.
The curriculum is also informed by elements of the Model Music Curriculum (March 2021), focusing on structured listening, rhythm development, vocal exploration, practical music-making, and composition. Through a combination of traditional instruments, digital tools, and multi-sensory approaches, we aim to develop pupils’ confidence, creativity, and enjoyment of music.
Music Development Plan
Structured Listening Activities – Pupils are introduced to a range of musical genres, helping them develop recognition of different styles, instruments, and musical elements.
Developing Pulse and Rhythm – The curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to develop a sense of steady beat, clap rhythms, and use percussion instruments to reinforce rhythmic patterns.
Singing and Vocal Exploration – Pupils engage in singing, vocal play, and echo-singing, supporting communication and social interaction.
Practical Music-Making – Use of body percussion, tuned and untuned instruments, and digital music tools to encourage active participation in music-making.
Composition and Improvisation – Pupils experiment with creating simple melodies, rhythmic patterns, and soundscapes using both traditional and digital resources.
